Enharmonic Oscillators: Towards the Global Dynamics of Delay Differential Equations
Alejandro López-Nieto (Free University of Berlin)

Abstract

Real-world processes often involve time delays, such as maturation times in population models and transmission lags in signal processing. However, the mathematical models that include time delays are infinite-dimensional and generally hard to analyze.

In the talk, based on my doctoral work, I will discuss the enharmonic oscillator: a prototypical model for the dynamics of scalar delay differential equations under symmetric negative feedback. In particular, I will give a complete qualitative description of the global dynamics of any enharmonic oscillator thanks to a specialized comparison principle by Mallet-Paret and Sell that reduces the dimensionality of the asymptotic dynamics. These results allow us to construct new examples explicitly and better understand the boundaries of delay-based modeling.
